Keeping your Overseas Property Safe
As your overseas property may not be occupied for the entire
year, it is vital that you take measures to protect it, especially
in your absence. As well as ensuring that you have comprehensive
home
insurance for your property, there are several steps you
can take to enhance the security of your holiday investments.
Security Systems
A good home security system can give you real peace of mind.
Security systems will vary in price, so shop around before
choosing a system that meets all your requirements while fitting
into our budget.
When it comes to installing your system, you may choose to
do it yourself. In this case, it may be advisable to purchase
a system in your home town - as the instructions will be far
easier to follow than those that come with systems purchased
in your holiday home location. If you opt for a security firm
to install it for you, you may find that they are not willing
to install a brand they are unfamiliar with, preferring instead
to install a local brand.
Timer Switches
A simple and inexpensive way to increase security is to install
automated timers for your lights. This way you can time lights
to come on and off whenever you wish, giving the appearance
of the property being occupied. Timers can also be used to
programme radios or televisions to switch on and off, again
creating the impression that someone is at home - just make
sure that the volume is at a suitable level. You can now also
find similar devices for curtain rails that will open and
shut curtains automatically while you are away.
Cancelling Mail
If you are going to be absent from your property, make sure
that you cancel all mail to your property while you are away.
Mail piling up inside your mailbox gives a big hint to thieves
that there is no one at home.
Water Damage
If you’re property will be unattended during potential
cold weather periods, be sure to turn the water off at the
mains before you leave to prevent a burst water pipe. You
may wish to leave your central heating on very low and on
a timer while you are away - this will ensure that pipes do
not freeze and potentially burst. This potential problem is
another good reason to ensure that you have adequate buildings
and contents insurance for your overseas property.
Get to know your Neighbours
Getting to know and trust your neighbours can be a big help
when it comes to securing your property. Asking a trusted
neighbour to keep an eye on your home while you are away will
give you added peace of mind. Asking them to collect mail,
or keep the garden in trim are small things that can help
keep thieves at bay.
